Multi-Core PCs.
If you have the latest multicore chip technology, then it might surprise you to know that not all operating systems cater correctly for multi-core operation.
Below you will find links to free hotfixes that addres this problem, along with relevant articles.
Along with this information, consider also adding a second HD to your PC, or even a third.
I currently run 2 drives on a Pentium D (Dual Core)
Drive 1: Operating System, and background running services, i.e. Antivirus, Picassa, Google Desktop, and various others like you will find in the free downloads section that maintain system optimization.
Drive 2: All Application Programs and files including Office, and Graphics applications.
If you have a 3rd HD sitting around doing nothing in a now extinct PC, you could add it into the mix and utilize it for a files and data only storage drive.

Why the fuss?
Ordinarily, your PC must access all of the applications above, from one drive, in different places and all at the same time. This means that the multicore capacity to operate at faster speeds is bottlenecked and impeded in its progress.
By seperating different functions onto seperate drives, you have a faster response time, and you have the main drive operating at optimum speed, and not impeding the progress of application software like microsoft office.
Once I altered my software and hard drive arrangement, I was literally able to reduce my clockspeed, by 15%, and still increase the performance.
An ordered system optimization might look like this.:
1) Download the Piriform system optimization software. Its all free, and can be used for private and or commercial use. In particular download and run CCleaner. wwww.piriform.com
2) Download the Free version software for memory tweaques and fixes at PGWARE. I use these off and on all the time. I recently re applied the ADSL throttle program and improved my latency time on a gaming site by 110 MB/S That is fairly significant. literally a 33% improvement. I use this in tandem to google accellerator.
